The Local Government Association, the umbrella body for councils, said: 'The severe lack of social rented homes available... means councils have no choice but to place households into temporary accommodation, including - in emergencies - bed and breakfasts.'

A similar block of prefabs has already been built four miles away in South Woodford, and now Redbridge Council and the construction firm Elliott have submitted planning applications to put 90 grey shipping container homes homes on Brocket Way Park and Woodman Road, near Manford Way Park, for ten years. 

Sam Chapman, 21, who has set up the Brocket and Manford Way Protest Group, said: 'We all want to help the homeless and vulnerable, but it has to be in the right area - not destroying greenfield sites.

'The council put me in here,' she said. 'It's better than Calais but no-one wishes to live in a container, especially when you have kids. When I got here and saw all of this, the container, I was crying.'
